Two recent news items illustrate why this matters. The Food and Drug Administration, after years of foot-dragging, moved this week to sharply limit the agricultural uses of one type of antibiotic. The move restricts, but sadly does not end, the foolish agri-industrial practice of carpet bombing the diets and veins of various kinds of livestock with chemicals that basic biology teaches will only lead to the Darwinistic rise of super-resistant bacteria. Those who understand the science involved have long known that the overuse of antibiotics only hastens the day when those life-saving chemicals will become useless. ...
